  Herman H. Soat called to rest after a very brief illness; aged 83 years. Herman H. Soat of Milford, died Monday morning, January 24, at 7:15, at the age of 83 years past. Mr. Soat was taken sick last Friday with an attack caused by gall stones, a sudden change for the worse occuring Sunday, from which he failed to rally. The funeral services were held from St. Joseph Catholic church Wednesday morning at 9:30, Rev. Father Marcellus officiating. Interment was made in Calvary cemetery. Mr. Soat was the father of twelve children, seven of whom survive to mourn his loss. Two died in infancy, andthree died during an epidemic of black diptheria. Those living are: Henry, Fred, Frank and Ben Soat; Mrs. Elizabeth Graf of Ione, Minn.; Mrs. Antone Benzkofer of Milford and Mrs. Louisa Gudmundson ofChandler, Minn., all of whom were in attendance at the last sad rites except Mrs. Gudmundsaon. Other relatives present from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schuite of Breda, Iowa, and Mrs. Ben Wempe, also from Breda. The wife and mother died six years ago source: Okoboji, Iowa, paper January 1921 Beginning a story on where Herman was born and why he does not appear in the census records of 1840, 1850 or 160. If Herman is in fact born in Illinois then it seems really strange that he does not appear in census records. Herman first appears in my research when he marries in 1866. I have been searching for Herman's parents for quite some time now. It does not make sense that he does not appear in census records. I encourage comments.dick benzkofer On September 11, 2012 I travelled to Marshalltown, Iowa. At St Mary's Church in Marshalltown I found two records. One, Henry Hermann born in 1871 parents Herman Soth (note spelling) and Kath Schottler-two dots on top of o. The other, Kath Christina born March 5, 1873 Herman and Kath parents. Also visited Edel Blacksmith shop in Haverhill. This shop started in 1883. Herman was a blacksmith in Jefferson Twp in 1870. I did not find a record for Agnes Soat at St Mary's. Herman was also a blacksmith in 1870.
